The Forks National Historic Site & Port - Winnipeg Tour Guide  Back to Winnipeg Tour Guide

Visit the place where Winnipeg’s history began, a vital center of commerce and transportation. For over 6,000 years people have come here to hunt, trade, share stories and perform ceremonial rites; the area was the hub of the western fur trade as early settlement began.

As the west developed, rivers, canoes and wooden paddles gave way to steel rails and steam engines as the major means of transportation. Later it became the home of the Canadian National Railway's maintenance shops. There are endless activities to be enjoyed at this funky downtown attraction.

Today the site is the city's top tourist attraction and is the venue for more than 100 community festivals throughout the year. The Forks includes a 9-acre interpretive park and adjoins the Assiniboine RiverWalk and River Trail.
The Manitoba Children’s Museum is located at this central location. Explore the outdoor attractions or head indoors to the market or Johnston Terminal for 3 floors of unique shops and restaurants, including an antique mall with every-changing range of vintage pieces sold on consignment.

The Forks is located downtown, at the junction of the Red and Assinibione rivers.
